We are interested in exploring the presentation of case information and are looking at testing and adopting parts of this pattern. Just placing this comment here at the moment to indicate that intent and keep a track of this @timpaul as this is marked todo on the community backlog does that mean it is in progress inside the design system team too?

Hi @sdh100shaun - no, this pattern is not actively being worked on by the team, but we'd be very interested in your sharing any work you do here.

Looking at those screenshots, I would expect that at least part of this pattern would be implemented using the new summary list component.

We are working on a project for DfT where fuel suppliers need to report the fossil and biofuel they have produced into the UK road network. We have used a version of this for what we are calling the 'Reconciliation pages'. Our users have to navigate a large set of data to see where it matches up and where they need to do something, or where they are waiting on someone else to do something. Our users like seeing as much as possible on the same page, so we chose to use the case summary pattern to help them feel like they are still on one page but also break down this large amount of information which is helpful for newer users. We have added statuses on the left menu panel to help users understand which areas they need to look at.

We have corresponding screens for other users in the system who will see opposite statuses and be able to track what they need to do.

We have completed several rounds of testing of this with users. They were all able to navigate through the different items on the left according to their statuses. Users were able to skip past data which was already sorted, or was waiting on someone else to action, and focused in on the data which needed action. This helped users complete their tasks quickly.

We also tested this screen with screen reader users and they struggled to navigate between the left menu and the content on the right. We had several other accessibility issues with other aspects of this page so decided to design a separate page for those who use screen readers. Other users can still benefit from using the case summary pattern and other users have access to a different page that is more suitable to their needs. We had tested the new accessible page with screen reader users and they appreciated having a dedicated page and it was much more usable for them. image
