Create a logo

Create a nice logo without trademarked elements (i.e. not based on the Firefox logo).

I'm thinking of helping with this. If it's okay, I have a couple questions since you don't want it to be based on the Firefox logo.

  • Do you have any starting preferences/suggestions for what object/animal/whatever the logo should incorporate?
  • Would it be okay to use the current Firefox colors?
  • Do you think it's a good idea to make the logo similar to the one at Privacy Tools (https://blog.privacytools.io/)? (FYI, that's the website that got me to use ffprofilemaker).

Hello!

I do not have an idea for the logo, yet. The avatar on Mastodon is simply the letters "FP" and when I had an ad on the info screens at 36C3 I used the Firefox logo together with a lock symbol.

But for a project logo it should definitely not be based on the Firefox logo itself, as the logo is a trademark of the Mozilla foundation and I think it is important that this is not an official Mozilla project.

Using Firefox colors would probably be okay. Maybe this should not be too similar as Mozilla seems to use the colors on related projects like Lockwise to associate them with their brand.

The logo of privacytools looks good (to me) because:

  • It works with two colors, a black and white version would work as well
  • It is probably easy to scale
  • It is simple, but has recognizable shapes
  • The wrench and shield are symbols for tuning things and safety.

But seems to have this disadvantages:

  • The wrench is associated with settings dialogs everywhere
  • It doesn't look unique. I would not be surprised to find other projects with a very similar logo
  • It is not directly clear, that it should communicate "privacy tuning"
  • The shapes are rather generic. In a list with many icons you would not see directly if the icon is in the list.

The same is true for my amateur design with the lock. A lock has a strong association with TLS in the browser context, so it does not really work as symbol for other privacy related things than encryption.

Hello Allo, below are PNGs of an SVG icon I made. Currently, I'm concerned with:

  • If I tried too hard to avoid the concepts "fire" and "fox".
  • If the shapes are too generic.

Further criticisms are very much welcome.

I am not sure about it. I would like when more people post an opinion. I will later ask on Reddit and Mastodon and may link the issue on the website before deciding this alone, if you don't mind.

I posted it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffprofile/ https://mastodon.social/@ffprofile/103771695065507218

No problem, criticisms are welcome.

I have kind of a "bad guy" association with the shape. I guess it should resemble the private browsing guy icon and users may recognize it. I am not sure about the protractor, it matches the shape nicely, but what does it mean? The style itself looks good and I think this would work not only as large image, but is still recognizable as favicon.

Still hoping for more opinions from others.

It is better to do something with the profile icon, which can be obtained from chrome://browser/skin/fxa/avatar-empty.svg.

@Madis0 Good idea.

Not sure if using this logo (not that much because of trademarks, but because it is a very basic shape), but using some "profile" logo is a good idea.

Is it possible to use/modify one of these icons from the Noun Project?
