Add Container addons (e.g Facebook Container)
General Setting (builtin function): privacy.userContext.enabled privacy.userContext.ui.enabled
General Container Addon (Nicer UI): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/
Site specific containers (automatically open sites in container, but in contrast to the multi-account container addon, external links from a container will be opened outside of the container):
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/facebook-container/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-container/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-container/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/twitter-container/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/contain-reddit/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/amazon-container/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/linkedin-container/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ebay-container/
Blocking facebook outside of the facebook container: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/no-facebook-outside-container/
Is there an extension, which does the same as the long list of site specific containers (Automatically opening a domain in the right container and opening links from the domain in the default container)? Installing many different addons for the same purpose is no good solution.
https://github.com/stoically/temporary-containers https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/temporary-containers/
Some experience I had with some of these addons:
- The addons like
google-container
break the back function, because they close the current tab and open the new url in a new container tab. Going back requires restoring two tabs and closing the wrong one again. - The temporary containers addon seems to leave
tmp5
containers behind some times
For integration in a default profile, it would be nice to have an addon, which does the most stuff without the user needing to learn how it works. Temporary-Containers is probably more an addon for people who actively want to use it and facebook-container
is more useful for the generator.
Just saw this project posted on Reddit. I came here to suggest these container addons. They are the reason I am on Firefox rather than something like Brave. While we can block lots of spying, we lose so much of the benefit when we still rely on Google, Facebook, etc. With these we can at least stop these companies from getting more data on us than they get when we are actively using them.
I am glad to see they were already suggested.
My problems here are, that I do not want to add too many extensions.
Extensions may slow down Firefox, they may be insecure and the current way to add them to the profile is not optimal, i.e., the bundled extensions are usually not the current version and one default option is to disable automatic extension updates, so some people may use the old version for a long time.
That's why I am not sure about adding such a list of extensions. On the other hand, especially the very specific extensions like these work like a charm without much configuration.
They also seem to break the back function of the browser in some cases, when they close the tab with history and reopen the page in a fresh tab in another container.
I was actually confused by the back button behavior until I saw the earlier comment. I didn't know why sometimes clicking on a link in a DuckDuckGo would break the back button and other times not. I don't know how hard this would be for Mozilla to fix. (It is an issue present in their own Multiple Account Containers extension.)
I agree with the general concerns regarding extensions. But, as you said, I think for the most part these are an exception for safety and usability. They are also something that it is better to have from the start rather than having to clear cookies and local storage for the previously signed in site then sign in again in the new site specific container.
That being said, I haven't looked at the source for any of these extensions, so I don't know how much really changes with the updates. I hope they are implemented in such a way that almost nothing would change other than maintaining the growing list of domains owned by these companies.
On the updates, is it possible to disable automatic updates for all extensions then have an exception for the ones the user chooses? I am guessing not, but that might be nice, if Firefox has that ability.
It is possible (disable automatic updates in the menu at the top and then toggle automatic updates per extension), but it is probably rather complicated to pre-configure this.
Currently auto-update is not even disabled, but it should probably be, see #179.
Understandable. I think overall there are some difficult decisions to make.
Suggestion from @xcasxcursex:
Containerise Allows you to make rulesets which ensure certain pages always open in certain containers. Perhaps you'll also find this useful.

Sorry for posting in the wrong thread. The addon I've linked essentially renders the site-specific and temporary container addons above, obsolete. It also offers a workaround for the history being broken, by optionally retaining the old tab when it changes containers.

Yes, that's this one :)
Edit: I have no affiliation with that addon, I just came across this great project and I use that project all day and I thought maybe they would go nicely together.
