Do you want to request a feature or report a bug?

Feature

What did you expect to see?

Instead of downloading files containing audio + video + lyrics, we could afford DL only lyrics and fetch content directly on youtube (or whatever). This would allow highiest quiality in videos and ease sharing of songs. This could be done either by a side feature getting the video ond copying it in the song directory updating the #video tag and/or directly taking the url as the video tag in song file (or any other better idea).

As nice as this feature is.. it's illegal to do so. Therefore i'm afraid i have to close this one. However it is legal if you happen to have a source of free music however most people wouldnt find their songs they wanna sing on there. If thats the case please re-open this again.

Actually I'm not quite sure of it being illegal even if one chooses to download videos of non-free songs (depends on Youtube licensing and on local legislation). Still, developing such a feature certainly wouldn't be illegal in any way, and at least there would be legitimate uses for this. Reopening as this wouldn't really be much different from e.g. https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl

In fact, any implementation of this should be based on that because Youtube frequently changes their APIs and youtube-dl quickly updates their downloader accordingly. It can also work with many other sites.

A practical issue is that the starting time would nearly always need adjusting and it could be difficult to find a good version out of the many options. Start time offset adjustment may not suffice because album vs. music video vs. live usually have different mixes/timing (but then, SingStar rips are based on music videos, so that could work).

Re: copyrights - distributing only the lyrics (TXT) of commercially licensed songs is usually illegal, so the only thing saved by this is distribution bandwidth. In practice copyright enforcers aren't really interested on anything labelled "Performous" or "UltraStar", or even "SingStar" anymore, but some still go after lyrics websites.

Let's close this issue. Lately there are other third-party tools that can be used by players for this at their own discretion. for instance USDB SYNCER. The games should concentrate on gameplay features. Third parties can create and distribute content. For example, third parties may sell song packages for their region according to license requirements.
