Better visual design and CSS in the course
The main part of the site, the course, doesn't look great. It's plain and generic and uses bootstrap. This stuff is really not my strong point so I need someone more skilled to assist. Doing this will hopefully get people more excited about futurecoder and help attract students, contributors, or even donors.
This is specifically about the course. Redesigning the home page is happening in #72
This looks cool: https://github.com/rcaferati/react-awesome-button
Must just check if it's as lightweight as it claims
What about using material UI? I have some experience with it
First of all, I wonder how much the design still needs improving. I can't remember how exactly it looked when I first opened this issue. Probably very similar, but I do think it's gotten a bit better. Maybe I've just gotten used to it or my standards have lowered. Or maybe I should unpin or even close this issue. What do you think? How does it look?
If you're willing to overhaul the whole frontend and migrate from bootstrap to material, I won't complain. It'll probably be an improvement. But I'm a bit concerned that:
- It might be a lot of work for you, and the end result might be more complex to maintain.
- It'll be hard to do this incrementally, i.e. make changes to only some parts, since a mixture of bootstrap and material might look very awkward.
- The end result, while probably nicer and more modern, might still have that generic feel which I was worried about. But that's probably me being fussy.
Well, design overall looks good, It's very clean and it's understandable. However bootstrap has some "bygone-era feel". There is a room for improvement but I think current design is definitely good enough :) If I came up with some concrete designs or suggestions for changes I'll bring them up :) I agree that it might be a lot of work with not that much of improvement.
