why "dispatch" name?

Open necenzurat opened this issue 10 years ago • 18 comments

connectify has the exact same name for their application

Well "dispatch" is a procedure in logistic.

You will see that name all over the place, particularly in programming. It's not surprising, it kind of make sense here, but I expected a better name as well. Even if it's replaced by something that means nothing but is still pronounceable.

That's up to the author though.

I'm very bad at naming things. If you have a better idea, I'll take any suggestion.

I'd rather have something SFW.

Well, you are doing something akin to "bonding" interfaces, so you could just call it Bond. Or James. Bonus points if the command is called james and the argument is bond.

jpcanepa avatar Dec 02 '13 12:12 jpcanepa

  • super massive black hole or maybe just black hole
  • goldeneye ( @jpcanepa nobody likes bond)
  • WiFi, Ethernet, Mobile = WEM or MEW or meow (Mobile Ethernet Or WiFi)
  • LINT
  • ...

necenzurat avatar Dec 02 '13 13:12 necenzurat

I like Meow, but I might be biased :3

nitrix avatar Dec 02 '13 16:12 nitrix

Meow is not gonna be enough when another type of connection will jump on board in the future. I would suggested you don't go that road.

This is a more clear description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplexing

multiplexing (...muxing) is a method by which multiple analogue message signals or digital data streams are combined into one signal over a shared medium

tomByrer avatar Dec 26 '13 12:12 tomByrer

I know this is old, but I don't see it that the name has been changed.. so.. I like what @tomBryer said about multiplexing. Also, I wanted to mention that I found this awesome bit of software by accident, while looking for something else. Although I understand what a proxy is and how it relates to the app, I wouldn't think of it in this sense. The name should be descriptive (not 'Microsoft descriptive', using 4-5 words..) :-P but, having net[work] [multi][plex][er] in the name would describe it perfectly for someone looking for it (who knows what they are looking for and/or understands some basic terminology).. just my two cents..

Also, this app doesn't come to mind when I hear 'load balancer'.. in a way, that's what it is doing.. but, I think most people looking for something like this will think of the server end of things when they hear that term.. just my third cent.. cool product! I think I'll play with the code now..
