Make strings translatable

Open milotype opened this issue 3 years ago • 6 comments

Please add the summary and description texts (see below) into one of the Weblate components so they can get translated into other languages.

Summary: Simple graph plotting

Description 1: Plots makes it easy to visualise mathematical formulae. In addition to basic arithmetic operations, it supports trigonometric, hyperbolic, exponential and logarithmic functions, as well as arbitrary sums and products.

Description 2: Plots is designed to integrate well with the GNOME desktop and takes advantage of modern hardware using OpenGL.

Also make sure those translated strings get used on localized web-pages like this one: https://world.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/apps-for-gnome/hr/app/com.github.alexhuntley.Plots/

Those strings (including those on the websites and in GNOME Software) come from the AppStream metainfo file.

All the translations must be in that one file, so Weblate cannot automatically update it with translations. We could set up a Weblate component manually and then I could copy the strings across periodically, but I think it would be simpler for translators just to edit the file directly (just like the .desktop file).

I'll add a French translation to it as an example.

Thank you. Yes, I think a Weblate component would be good, so the translations would be accessible …

@alexhuntley BTW, Croatian is already translated in the AppStream metainfo file.

Sadly it still doesn't show translated at https://apps.gnome.org/hr/app/com.github.alexhuntley.Plots/

Maybe that depends upon the GNOME Circle admin ?

Are you sure apps.gnome.org supports Croatian? It doesn't seem to be listed in the language selector at https://apps.gnome.org/languages/

Sadly not, because the Croatian coordinator Goran Vidović is extremely slow in reviewing/releasing my transaltions (https://l10n.gnome.org/users/milotype/). I've contacted him on March 3rd 2022 and he responded, he will soon review/release my transaltions. Whatever soon means …

So I guess, you and I can't do much, but wait until the coordinator releases those translations.

I'm frustrated about his behaviour for a long time and had several discusssions in the gnome mailing list, but nobody is prepared to take action, because the "Language coordinator" is some kind of god and has the power to decide when and whether to review/release Croatian translations … I've seen several Croatian translators who joined the platform, and after a short time left it …

I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully a solution can be found sooner rather than later.
