Convert jfif file types

Gimp will open .jfif image files and even save them in another format. BIMP, however, will not recognize files in the .jfif format for batch conversions. Can this be done?

Since this format can be used as input only, but not as output, I'm wondering what could happen if the user adds 1 or more JFIF files in the list, without adding a "Change compression and format" step. Should the files automatically be re-saved as... JPEG maybe?
