[Workaroud] Reduce jitter in Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance (Snowblind engine)

Open Forusim opened this issue 3 years ago • 6 comments

As you may know the games with the Snowblind engine have graphical glitches, when run in the PS3 emulation. With the available configs the glitches are mostly gone. However the whole picture and menus jitters/shaking like crazy, which is not enjoyable either.

I am running REBUG 4.86.1 LITE EDITION with Corba 8.2 on a PS3 SLIM.

Using the hidden debug menu I was able to reduce the jitter in most scenes, where water and fire are most demanding. IMG_20210820_173156 The higher the VSYNC DELAY the less jitter is occurring, but also the motion is slowed down. I found that 500.000 is a good compromise between jitter and slowdown. IMG_20210820_173055 I would ask the developers to look into the CONFIG file especially for the VSYNC related settings. So there is no need to open the debug menu on every launch of this game.

Ideally there is a flag, which eliminates the jitter without slowing down the game.

You could try asking directly to mrjaredbeta, Agrippa, kozarovv and others in this forum: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/compatibility-list-ps2-on-ps3.1306/

I will post a link, but I suggest to keep trying to register so you can answer questions about this issue.

This is the answer by @agrippa on psx-place forum: "It is not a compromise by any means. It is an insane amount of delay making every cutscene desynchronized and having the game slowed down all the time. If someone is bothered by the jitter, I recommend to obtain a no interlace patch from the PCSX2 forums and apply it to the ISO using the PS2 Patch Engine. That patch eliminates the jitter at the expense of the lower quality of the image with the text hard to read sometimes. It is the reason why it is not suitable to include it into the config. No Dark Alliance games would probably be ever playable with full speed all the time on the netemu."

Thank you for the follow up. So to deliver the amazing (for that time and specs) visual effects the engine used interlacing, which cannot be replicated properly on PS3 and HDMI. I will try out that patching and see what gives me the best experience.

I was able to apply "no interlace" patch for the SLUS_200.35 to my SLES_506.72 edition. Unfortunately the patched game is giving me black screen after language selection. This was expected, but still a pity.
