Apply as default app shipped with some desktop environments ?
I was surprised my OS (Linux Mint) didn't come with a default alarm clock app, as it's quite the useful feature ! And i was wondering how these default apps were selected. It seems that, while some of them are built in-house, many of them go through a review process and get approved for later inclusion.
I think alarm-clock could be a good candidate as a default app ! An alarm is always useful and a good, lightweight and efficient alarm app might find its place among a toolbox of other apps installed by default.
The only organization i know of who is openly welcoming new apps is KDE : https://develop.kde.org/docs/getting-started/add-project/ I'm very ignorant on the technicalities behind this process, but it might be interesting to understand it. After some research it seems it's mainly dektop environments which seek defaults apps to integrate under their umbrella.
Do you think that would be a desirable goal ?
Debian Linux has a package called "popularity-contest" that does exactly what it might sound like: It automatically phones home to report packages Users regularly install and use.
It's one way that Users can show their fandom without doing anything else beyond installing that secondary package. I really believe it works because I've seen a couple of my own personal favorite tools become ISO defaults over the years.
Unfortunately i can't seem to install it on my device @Butterfly ... but does it mean every use rwho wants their apps to be chosen need to install this app as well ? Seems biased, as people who are already aware of that app are people with a specific profile already !
