Logs me out instead of playing sound
Applet has worked for decades, but now just logs me out instead of playing sound. I wake up and am presented login request.

Further trials (and tribulations) lead me to believe that it appears the problem is with rhythmbox, and setting 'open with' for audio files to VLC solves it for audio files, but not for the alarm applet.
So, for my system rhythmbox appears broken, and I can live with that, but not without my alarm clock!
I have absolutely no idea how this is happening. I feel like something might be wrong in your system. An application shouldn't just log you out or crash your entire desktop session.
Can you reproduce it on demand? If you set a countdown timer for 5 seconds with the default settings, does it happen? Does it only happen when you pick a specific media player (like rhythmbox that you mentioned)?
Perhaps you can check journalctl -e right after the logout happens to possibly try to figure out why your desktop session is crashing.
