Debian 8 alarm not working after I close the window

The Debian 8 (Gnome), alarm applet is not alarming, if I close its window. Is that an intended behaviour or a bug? I expected that once an alarm is set it would go off, no matter what. That makes it useless for weekly alarms, since it's kind of annoying to let the window open all the time.
