SponsorBlock tripping YouTube's anti-adblock protections
Starting June 6 2025 I started to get messages from youtube like so
I thought I got added to an experiment. I did some searching and couldn't find a solution except to use a third party website/extension, youtube-nocookie. However, some videos do not work with that, so I went digging and eventually narrowed it down to SponsorBlock. Disabling SponsorBlock removes the issue and enabling again triggers the issue while touching none of my other extensions like uBlock Origin.
I am currently on Firefox 139.0.4 64bit, and Windows 10 22H2 (19045.5965).
I think because the ads are usually marked as full-length skippable stuff, and youtube now checks for how long you'd watched them? So probably muting the ads could work?
if the problem is SponserBlock then this isn't the solution, but it's something you can try
about:preferences#privacy > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Exceptions and add the following, setting each one to 'block':
https://www.youtube.com
https://www.google.com
https://consent.youtube.com
https://consent.google.com
I'm experiencing the same problem! I discovered through experience that SponsorBlock triggers YouTubs's anti-adblock protections. Disabling SponsorBlock resolves the issue.
One of my accounts has been affected by new tests, though the specifics differ slightly (in my case, my video takes 10 to 30 seconds to load. Occasionally, a message "Experiencing interruptions?" appears at the bottom).
about:preferences#privacy > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Exceptionsand add the following, setting each one to 'block':
I tried this. The video doesn't load: it plays for a second and then stops.
Also, blocking cookies will probably not work with a logged in account?
Like I would rather have Those advertisements Play any muted stay done trying to skip it and then triggering the YouTube "I can't do this Dave" thing.
Does it appear on specific videos?
@noideastowork both of the videos you screenshotted have no sponsorblock segments, so no skipping would happen, so I don't see how sponsorblock would trigger anything
@ajayyy Yeah, that's the strangest thing! Regardless of whether there are sponsorblock segments in the video or not, such freezes occur when sponsorblock is enabled.
I have tested it with Ublock Origin on Chrome and Yandex Browser. I also tested it on the Brave browser with its built-in ad blocker. The problem disappears only if you turn off sponsorblock.
Alternatively, you can shift your virtual location to a region without advertisements, such as Russia or Armenia using VPN. In this scenario, disabling the sponsorblock is unnecessary.
such freezes occur
Freezing for 10 seconds is a known problem right now with YT's anti-adblocking thing unrelated to sponsorblock. I am able to get that to happen without sponsorblock enabled. It only happens after reloading the whole page.
Note: Sponsorblock can also sometimes cause An error occurred upon loading a video to appear at random until it is turned off.
