Video Speed/Playback issue

Open ar065 opened this issue 2 years ago • 4 comments

I assume this has to do with the sponsor being almost exactly when the video starts. This video is the first time I've ever encountered this issue.

Settings: All default, with manual skip option enabled.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeHeMZa92eI
  2. Pause the video (I did this with spacebar)
  3. Press 0 to go to the very start of the video
  4. Unpause the video (Also used spacebar to do this)

Result: The video speed is upped drastically, I'm not sure by how much however it's a very noticeable difference. I actually went to youtube video settings to check if I accidentally sped it up, however there were no such changes. I then managed to reproduce the issue successfully multiple times. To verify that this was sponsor blocks issue, I enabled sponsor block to be used in incognito mode, where no other extensions are being used. I was then able to reproduce the issue there as well. I tested this with and without sponsor block as well. In situations where it was installed, this issue occurred.

I apologize if this is a duplicate issue, however I looked through issues and couldn't find one myself (Although I could have missed it).

Edit: Just noticed that if you repeat steps 2 - 4, the speed will get exponentially faster.

Here is a video showing the issue, not sure if it acts differently on different browsers, but here is my browser version Brave | 1.49.132 Chromium: 111.0.5563.147 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Indeed it does not, although it does skip parts of the video. This makes it entirely possible for it to have the effect of speeding up playback; and for this to happen it would have to get stuck in a loop of skipping parts of the video, which is what appears to be happening in this case.

This bug is real and happens but usually gets fixed with a quick page reload. but it only started occurring from last month. It is really hard to reproduce and also occurs on chrome
