Passive skills
So this has been talked about already as part of this ticket: https://github.com/aikaterna/gobcog/issues/6
I thought it would be good to make a new issue specifically around this as I really like the idea of passive skills. To keep things simple (for development and for players), I think we can let players select the background of their hero. Each background comes with their own passive skills and any hero class can have any background - however some classes would work better with specific backgrounds. Players get to chose to be selfish or to help the group with their background selection.
Also, I think backgrounds should be something that is rarely changed and would only allow someone to change their background once per rebirth (for example).
I've spend some time coming up with a handful of example backgrounds with their passive abilities. They could either be used to make a hero class stronger (e.g. Knight + Berserker), or to make a hero class more versitile (Politician + Wizard). As always, these may be quite unbalanced and may need monster buffs alongside them. I hope they serve as a good conversation starter for this feature. I tried to keep things as simple as I could with the passive abilities. They will fall into one of these categories:
- Impacts stats while the background is chosen
- Impacts the battle results in some form
- Impacts the rewards from the battle
- Impacts something else outside of battle (e.g. forging)
I like the idea that you get a sense of progression in the game outside of the direct buffs re-births give you. So I have added some suggestions to what level each passive skill is unlocked at. As you can see, new players have limited options but as they re-birth they unlock new and different play styles.
In time, more passive abilities can be added for higher level players. For example, at 50 rebirths you unlock "Deity" which has some incredible passive abilities.
Let me know your thoughts. FYI I decided to steer away from "races" intentionally.

I would really like to see a passive skill tree (Similar to Fallen Sword if you d ever seen that). Where you earn 1 skill every rebirth and you can add it to any skill. But I think that mechanic may be too large of an undertaking from a development and content perspective).
Here's info on Fallen Sword as a reference in case you prefer a system like this:
