dev branch sync across devices

I am trying to sync my annotations across two devices and I have set

annotations_directory /home/nikin/Dropbox/sioyek/annotations
shared_database_path /home/nikin/Dropbox/sioyek/shared.db

in my prefs_user.config file. This sioyek directory in my dropbox has only these two files (i) annotations/ and (ii) shared.db. The local database is at .local/share/sioyek/local.db.

I also tried to share this entire .local/share/sioyek/local.db across both devices. However, only the freehand drawings are getting synced across my devices but the highlights aren't. Why is this? Can you please point me to something that will help me fix this.

Have you modified the files in any way (e.g. adding an embedded PDF annotation)?
