The agents.md repo should be owned by an organization, not OpenAI

As its goal is to be an open standard shared by all, the ownership of this repo should be transferred to some GitHub organization rather than OpenAI specifically.

I agree, but it's probably more complicated than that.

While transferring the GitHub project to an organisation named "agents.md" (or whatever) is trivial (and it's MIT licence, so could easily be done anyway), that doesn't really address any issue. e.g. ownership of the domain "agents.md" and deployment of the GitHub site to there.

This requires actual transfer to a different legal entity than OpenAI, along with control of the GitHub repository. The organisation would also need ongoing funding, although minimal, e.g. to maintain the domain registration.

I'm always a big fan of "buy not build", i.e. reuse -- while the inclination may be to set up a brand new organisation, I think it would be much better to transfer ownership to an existing organisation.

Some ideas that come to mind are W3C, Mozilla, Free Software Foundation (GNU), or IEEE.

Technically the parent OpenAI is also a non-profit, although it's behaviour seems to make a lot more money than the others mentioned. But legally they are largely the same, i.e. nothing stops Mozilla, etc from doing wrong stuff.

So, leaving the legal ownership with OpenAI could be considered open.

They could also simply change the GitHub org, as suggested, which might improve initial first impressions -- but also open them up to being accused of hiding the real ownership.

On balance, I'm probably inclined to transparency -- the repo is owned by OpenAI, which is a non-profit whose mission is to further AI (which includes sponsoring standards such as this).
