Email Notification for Newly Published Bookmarked Talks

Open enderahmetyurt opened this issue 3 months ago • 5 comments

Description: Currently, I can bookmark my favorite talks on the conference website, but there’s no way (or we have 🤷‍♂️) to get notified when these bookmarked talks are actually published.

Feature request:

When a bookmarked talk gets published, I should receive an email notification.

The email should contain:

The talk’s title

The speaker’s name

A direct link to the talk details page

Ideally, users can manage these notifications (e.g., opt-in/out in settings).

Why this is useful:

Bookmarks help me track the talks I’m most excited about, but without notifications, I have to manually check the website.

An automated email would improve the experience by making sure I don’t miss newly available content.

Example scenario:

I bookmark talks from DHH, Chris Oliver, Joe Masilotti, etc.

Once Rails World publishes their talk details, I immediately get an email letting me know it’s live.

What do you think?

Good point! I had a very similar idea in issue #1098. Adrian mentioned not using any email service for now. The good news is that we already have a WIP in #1103 — maybe it could fit this goal as well.

@enderahmetyurt Since emails are unlikely to happen, what do you think about an in-app notification system? Think something like a little bell on the top right that indicates if there's anything new for you - such as updated talks that you've bookmarked.

You'd still have to check the website, but it'd help to get the information you want at a glance. This approach has the upside of being simple to implement and not relying on third party services.

Thoughts?

if we don't have an email system, your in app suggest looks fine.

Great! @hschne

@enderahmetyurt if you don't mind, I'd like to work on that.
