It just occurred to me that there's a completely different approach to this: attach a smartphone to your head using some kind of hat and use its accelerometer and gyroscope....

Correction: it starts with the correct width for the orientation you're holding. If that's portrait and you switch to landscape, you only see half the text cos it's too wide....
