otfautohint: Add option to hint only horizontal stems?
The (modern) Windows CFF renderer in e.g. DirectWrite seems to take CFF hints very seriously and will shuffle vertical stems around as if in a GDI environment. To stop it from doing that and get rendering more in line with other modern "lightly hinted" ClearType fonts and maybe even reduce file size, how about an option to only consider horizontal stems?
Trying to put this back on the table, is this something someone is working on? Or are there other solutions to prevent (or maybe remove) vertical hints?
Hmm. This sort of got linked in my head with #1687 as part of a more general functionality. Unfortunately that other problem is a bit trickier.
This is not a high priority, but it's also not very difficult to implement. I'll at least keep in mind that it's something still actively sought after.
That would be great! the otfautohinter is something I use a lot in my workflow and it would be fantastic to have at least a little bit of control.
