Just want to point out that Source Han Sans/源ノ角ゴシック and Source Han Sans JP/源ノ角ゴシック JP are not the same. They are two different deployments of the same font family.
- This is the Region-specific Subset OpenType/CFF a.k.a. Subset OTF format.
- The name, Source Han Sans JP/源ノ角ゴシック JP, indicates that this is the Japanese version of this format.
- It only covers the codepoints necessary for the region. For JP, about ~17,900 codepoints are covered.
- It only includes the glyphs that are necessary for the region.about ~17,900 codepoints are covered.
- It only includes the glyphs that are necessary for the region. So, Source Han Sans JP does not have glyphs for CN, TW, HK and KR.
- The filename for this version is
SourceHanSansJP-*.otf
. - File size is relatively small. Each OTF file costs around 5MB for Japanese variant.
- Font resources for this deployement can be found in https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans/tree/release/SubsetOTF.
Source Han Sans/
- This is the Language-specific OpenType/CFF format of the font.
- Unlike other regions, Japanese version doesn't have a language indicator for this format. So the name Source Han Sans/源ノ角ゴシック indicates that this is the Japanese version of this format.
- It covers the codepoints supported in ALL supported region. So the Japanese version also includes codepoints necessary for Simplified Chinese (GB18030), Traditional Chinese (Taiwan and Hong Kong, i.e. Big5 + HKSCS) and Koren. As a result, >40,000 codepoints are covered.
- The glyphs are defaulted to the Japanese convention, but it also contains glyphs for other regions. Users can access glyphs of a different language using the "LOCL" OpenType feature.
- Depends on the deployment, the filename will be
SourceHanSans-*.otf
for "OTF" file format,SourceHanSans-*.ttc
for "OTC" file format, andSourceHanSans.ttc
for "Super OTC" file format. - File size is relatively large. For OTF format, each OTF instance costs around 16MB for Japanese variant.
- Resources of the deployment can be found in https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans/tree/release/OTF (OTF), https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans/tree/release/OTC (OTC), and https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-han-sans/tree/release/SuperOTC (Super OTC).
Dear Tamcy Thanks for your response. I know Source Han Sans JP and 源ノ角ゴシック JP belong to different font family. And I did download the font from the link that you mentioned. But the internal names of Regular and Bold are weird as I discribed above.
