Issue
A general topic of discussion for some time has been whether we want to make our own Mastodon or Bluesky server. Some questions would be:
- Possible benefits
- Possible drawbacks
- Whether we use the activist.org domain or another
- Where we host it
Providing Mastodon based micro blogging that’s directly tied to a person’s activist account (same IDs for users/orgs on activist and the Mastodon instance) could be a way to support the sharing of information for the user base. There definitely are some major positives, but time resources need to be factored in as well. At time of writing this is low priority, but a discussion of whether and how best to do this is welcome 😊
Had a discussion about this today with someone at CCCamp :) He was saying he thinks this is a great way to spread word of the platform to people via usernames, and we were both thinking that it means [email protected]
sounds best in those regards. In terms of making sure that people on Mastodon are following our conduct guidelines, we could also restrict this to people who are on activist and are in an organization.
Note that we need to consider the quite ent for email addresses for this 🤔 Mastodon does require an email server: see the run your own server docs.
Edit: note that we can connect our users though. See mastodon#942 :)
