Analytics
We should discuss enabling analytics of the Anthology through Google analytics.
What would be the gain for us?
I don't see what actionable insights we might get there that would offset the negative impact (more things to load, opt-out banner, understanding how third-party content blocking impacts it).We already have the Google search console and the web server access logs, which also give us (possibly) actionable insights but I don't see us actually acting on it at the moment.
The impetus for the issue was someone emailing in to ask for access statistics on their paper. I have the sense this might factor in to promotion portfolios for European academics, perhaps?
It occurs to me maybe you can get these things from the search console, but I couldn't seem to find it. I guess we'd have to do log analysis which we're currently not doing at all.
I agree loading more scripts, handling opt-outs and cookie notices would be severe drags. These are good points.
At least we have the discussion on the record now :)
Simple access statistics for papers should not be too difficult to produce based on the raw server logs.
Producing some statistics for the Anthology has been on my mind for a while now. If I can get access to the server logs I'm happy to take a look at those too ;)
