Invalid var package name: 'Capt. Harlock.RQ_Custom_Look.1.var'

It's indeed an invalid filename, there shouldn't be a space as the first character of "Harlock"! You could reach out to the author so they can fix their package name.

I will, but utilities should ignore invalid or broken packages, raise a warning that they were skipped, and then continue execution.

Ah and you're saying it's stopping instead of skipping, understood! Is this something you'd like to do a PR for? I won't be investing time in varbsorb in the short term but I'll gladly review a PR.
