I tested using using Android and confirmed the issue, using Ubuntu I can connect and ping the device.
Also my original "wapi psk wlan0 mypasswd 1" was wrong, it should be "wapi psk wlan1 mypasswd 1" or more correctly "wapi psk wlan1 mypasswd 3" for WPA2. Thanks @tmedicci...
