something is off in demo 1

I am failing to get through step 1 of demo 1.

Things are fine until it comes time to press 'i'. I see in the video that pressing 'i' ends up selecting the first string in the first line and in the third line. When I press 'i', however, I end up selecting from the 2nd character of the first and third lines to the second-to-the-last characters of those lines.

I did this using emacs -Q, then setting up lispy, so I don't think it is something in my personal configs. Maybe there is some other setup I need to do? Or maybe something has changed in lispy since the demo script was made?
