avy-style pre not working with latest emacs 28?

Using the latest emacs 28 (commit ef07d0b8), with native compilation.

Steps to reproduce

1. emacs -Q
2. M-x package-initialize RET
3. M-x visual-line-mode RET
4. M-: (setq avy-style 'pre)RET
5. M-x avy-goto-lineRET

The labels are on target, obscuring the target.
