Highlighting does not work in some cases in Markdown

If I use <!-- (with double dash, the "right" xml comment tag) extension works fine. But if I use <!--- (triple dash, wich is compatible with pandoc) extension fails to highlight keywords.

Can this be fixed on a user side?
