Plugin icon size and spacing

Would it be possible for plugins to override the icon size set in the global preferences (as long as they don't go larger than the panel size)? For example:

Also, is it possible to change the spacing between icons in the system tray?

This would be nice to have, although I'd prefer if the image was cropped instead of constrained to the panel size.

This is basically the only new feature that I need to make the switch to fbpanel for my project. I just wondered if now the new year is well under way, whether you'll find time to complete it?
