LTN app future ideas
Just synthesizing ideas for future features from recent meetings.
More layers
- Show schools, community centres, medical facilities, etc as a POI layer
- When external data on real traffic counts / shortcutting is available, could show it. (Unclear how we would recalculate anything after placing filters)
- Bring in external data on footfall patterns, air quality, collisions
- Maybe pocket park should be a filter type?
More edits
Crossings! Showing the existing ones and adding new ones seems like the hugely repeated ask. (And then calculating metrics like porosity and mesh density.)
And then main road treatments -- luckily we've done stuff before. Maybe the future is to combine bike.abstreet.org with the LTN tool, have one consolidated place to design different interventions that work together.
Tutorial
A/B Street the traffic sim had a gamified tutorial in the beginning. It was extremely high effort to build, but seems to have be used widely. We could introduce LTN controls gradually, and then also set fake objectives like fixing all east-west shortcuts with minimal filters. The goals when people are designing LTNs vary widely, and we should be careful about being too prescriptive. But a tutorial mode with challenges asking for a specific result would be a great way to teach people to think strategically.
Analyzing results
We can download all the files people upload from S3. The upload time can tell us roughly what workshop might've been the origin. We need to figure out what kind of aggregate reporting is useful... maybe a heatmap of where people place filters? Or a way to group similar proposals together?
