It will be probably good to use explicit default version instead of sorted list.
The best approach here will be to detect pre-release versions and add a check if user wants to be notified about the new version or not. Hopefully implementing https://github.com/fedora-infra/anitya/issues/753 should...

On which project? I checked https://release-monitoring.org/project/5830/ and the box shows versions scheme without issue.
