You basically never want to select actually everything. Really you want to select the highest rank stuff, or all combat or something like that.

I remember bringing this up loosely and getting the counterargument that it's nice to get the total cost/income/whatever shown in the selection info panel. Ideally global totals would be available in some display without having to actually select units.
