Future-bannered US Routes

Open ZeLonewolf opened this issue 3 years ago • 2 comments

This may be a bit outside the scope of #153 but it's at least closely related. Should a FUTURE banner be added for US Routes? I just happened to encounter this signage in Spokane, WA: image image source

It looks like this particular section of road is tagged ref=US 395 Fut but I noticed this highway tagging page on the wiki suggests using ref=* Future rather than Fut so I may retag it if the banner is added to Americana.

Blocked by #153

I would personally support this, with a similar style to the signage - FUT above a US highway shield. Though we would need compatible tagging -- I would recommend network=US:US:Future ref=395 for this specific case.

Yes, there are already several examples of network=US:I:Future, so network=US:US:Future would be sensible. The way ref was probably abbreviated as “Fut” from back in the days when openstreetmap-carto could only render a way ref up to seven characters long.

The Louisiana DOTD’s official highway maps have consistently marked the Future I-49 corridor for years, always concurrent with U.S. 90 or U.S. 90 Business, so there’s definitely precedent for rendering these corridors with route shields, even if they aren’t technically routes yet:
