Delaying login requirement until changes are saved

Open Gustavo22Soaresh opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Description Allowing new users to explore the editor without the need to log in initially can be a highly effective strategy. The Nielsen Norman Group article on login walls highlights how this barrier can deter new users. If the ID adopted the approach of requesting login only when saving changes, it could reduce initial frustration and increase participation. By letting users experience the editor first, they may feel more engaged and motivated to register, knowing their contributions will be meaningful. This change can turn curious visitors into active contributors, boosting the project's growth and quality.

Since iD already supports this mode of operation, this seems quite straightforward to implement. I think this sort of demo would be really useful especially for people who just want to try it out. Creating an account before starting editing is a big commitment. iD also creates backups of the changes so if a new user accidentally closes the iD site they will be able to recover them easily. Generally, it is something we should experiment with, I like the concept.

Just to add a bit more info, this is how Rapid operates as well.
