YubiKey keeps disappearing and reappearing

Open Ch00k opened this issue 5 years ago • 8 comments

  • Yubico Authenticator version: 5.0.4
  • Operating system and version: macOS 10.14.6
  • YubiKey model and version: YubiKey 5C [OTP+FIDO+CCID]
  • Bug description summary: The yubikey keeps appearing and disappearing in the Authenticator UI. The symptoms are the same as in #556. Running the authenticator with --log-level DEBUG produces the same output as in #656 description.

Steps to reproduce

With the yubikey inserted, start Yubico Authenticator

Expected result

The app keeps losing the yubikey every couple of seconds, and the detecting again.

Actual results

The app keeps the yubikey detected.

Other info

I just upgraded from 5.0.1 (or 5.0.2, don't remember exactly) where I never had this issue, to 5.0.4, where I have it all the time. I initially installed the app from the AppStore. I then deleted it, and tried installing the version, that can be downloaded from the yubico website, but the issue can be reproduced there as well.

I just reproduced the issue with 5.0.3 and 5.0.2. Only with 5.0.1 is the issue not reproducible.

Hi, And thanks for letting us know. Does restarting pcscd do a difference?

Does restarting pcscd also apply to macOS? If so, how do I restart it?

Ch00k avatar Oct 15 '20 10:10 Ch00k

@Ch00k That was meant for Linux, since it is a known issue on that OS. Not sure about macOS though, If I am understanding correctly, the only version that does not have this issue is 5.0.1, is that right?

Getting the same. 5.0.4, downgraded to 5.0.1 - just keeps disappearing and reappearing, 2fa codes do not show up, unusable and my accounts are inaccessible.

Has there been any movement in this issue? I just purchased two Yubikeys (5C NFC and 5 NFC). The Yubikey 5 NFC works fine in v5.0.4 of the authenticator, but the Yubikey 5C NFC is having the same issues mentioned in this thread. It's worth noting that I'm using Windows 10 and not macOS and the 5C is plugged into a hub on my keyboard (Massdrop CTRL). I figured the keyboard could be causing my issue and I don't have a USB C adaptor to test further. Is the only fix to downgrade to 5.0.1?

@ModestTG Yes, there has been movement. We are working on a new version of the authenticator that, hopefully, will work better. There is no ETA yet.

I have never seen this issue on Windows 10, which makes me think, like you point out, that it is your keyboard causing the issue. You could try using YubiKey Manager CLI, it can also be used to show credentials. It is, however, a CLI, so if you are not comfortable using the terminal then perhaps the best workaround is to downgrade the authenticator and see if that works better. A guide for how to use the CLI is available here, if you are interested.

The arch wiki states that you probably should install the ccid package. Not sure why this isn't a dependency in the first place or if this is the root cause though.
