Note that the value of automatic management of which items and pages are read is highly dependent on the user. Currently, this functionality is spread across a variety of features that are separately configured. It may prove convenient for a certain group of users to be able to disable them uniformly through a single, clear configuration switch. Furthermore, it may be preferred, though presently appears impossible, to disable tracking of read items completely, that is, disabling recording of which items have been read, instead of or in addition to disabling certain display features.

Further note that among the row of icon buttons in which this button appears, this one is the only that expresses a display preference rather than an action on the current session or some selected objects. Perhaps this toggle should be moved into the options box, or the right side of the bar, where other display preferences are shown.
