I have a feeling the artifacts have something to do with crossterm, but that's an issue for another time.
It might be null bytes, unsure.
If there are null bytes, I've made changes so they're removed from the messages. Will be in the next release. On another note, searching seems to work, along with username...

Bumping this PR, #2390 has been merged.
This PR has been open for around 2 years. Doesn't seem to be needed at the moment to continue, so I'll close this, at least for now.
