Detect charging vs running on battery

Is there a way to know if the board is running on AC power i.e. being charged, vs running on battery power? I'd like to do some power saving functions only if the board is without external power. I'm happy to solder a connection if that will help?

+1. Is there any way to check if the board is in charging mode? One easy way could be checking charging led state pin if accessible by code.
