Opensource license filter

Open mooreatv opened this issue 4 years ago • 5 comments

Please add support for, as a user, only see OpenSource (ie one of the std license: apache, mit, lgpl, etc...) addons and show that badge in the search of addons

For addon authors a tag to summarize the license in the toc

Thank!

What's the reason you want to be able to filter on licenses? I don't see how this matters for end-users

Well it matters to me as I don't want to use addons that end up dying because of ARR default

It's an awareness raising thing too

and if you do it then https://wowaddons.org/ is done/don't have to invent it :)

Also it would mean a download spot that doesn't get you in trouble with cf

I have no idea what ARR is. I have yet to see an addon die because of license issues, though I haven't been around for that long.

End-users don't care about licenses and I honestly don't want to bother them with it as 99.9% doesn't care. I've been doing open-source for years and licenses are still voodoo for me most of the time.

Not an issue at the moment, and I don't think licenses will the issue in the future

I have no idea what ARR is.

"ARR" is "all rights reserved" - add-ons which haven't been permissively licensed.

Somehow I was sure I had replied, layday already answered the ARR part.

I have seen several addons die because the author lost interest and the license didn't allow someone else to pick it up.

It's unfortunate people don't care about licenses and that would be to help educate them

Re cf: an opensource license typically is matched with a repo you can freely download the addon from, that was my point.
