Consider improving logo functionality in editor and be clear about what it does

What problem does this address?

Originally reported on Slack #. Currently the site logo has a lack of intuitivity.

Here are some of it's states and uses across various implementations, note it varies.

Here you get no hover indication but you do get a tooltip.

What is your proposed solution?

I propose exploring right now, so will be adding feedback labels to start that. Ideally there needs to be some consistency and a decision made on the functionality of the logo there. As shown, it varies how it behaves and that only compounds the problem.

Personally, I think a simple solution is an indicator that means back and clearly marks the exits, then you don't need to hover to know where you are going. That said there needs to be a wider discussion hence this ticket.

This was reported on Slack, multiple people agreed this was an issue, so now let's have a discussion in the issue and see what options could be done around this. I would encourage all thoughts, but also focusing on the point of how non-functional this logo feels and the inconsistencies between the experiences when you compare them. We might decide that is ok, personally I feel what we resolve for one we should for both.

Possibly related

There are some issues that have some related thinking on this, none are exact in reading so I created this issue but happy to re-think otherwise.

  • Visual inconsistencies in using the site logo: #
  • Issue with finding a way to quite # : in part this one is resolved with the implementation we have today but it goes a bit wider and feels relevant for site editor.

Good call, @karmatosed! For the sake of completeness, I’ll repost my comment from the thread here.

At the risk of stepping on the toes of designers far more experienced than me — or sketching something before it’s been properly brainstormed or discussed (though I do think a sketch can sometimes help guide the conversation) — I think bringing back a familiar element could really help.

It wouldn’t just improve recognisability, but also give users a stronger sense of orientation and confidence when navigating an area that can still feel a bit disconnected or new.

I gave the bar a gradient to give it a more modern feel and to create a subtle sense of separation from the rest of the UI — without making it feel heavy or distracting. That said, I’m sure others here can express and refine these ideas more elegantly.

I think bringing back a familiar element could really help.

Isn't this basically the fullscreen mode in the page editor? Same as in https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/70470 we kinda have a solution already, we only need to change what's default.

Related: It has been suggested that the site's background color be applied to this logo.

This was made consistent between post and site editors in #71929
