This gives us more information that can be used to debug the issue.
The original text is good (I have just added a direct link to the new mobile forum)
Error: “Error establishing a database connection”
If you get a page featuring the message “Error Establishing Database Connection,” this means that there is a problem with the connection to your database and there could be a number of reasons for this.
This isn’t a problem that can be solved in the WordPress app (or by the WordPress app support team). You can find troubleshooting tips on the Common WordPress Errors support page.
For additional help, please contact your website hosting provider. You can also get more help and advice from the WordPress community: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/mobile/

Error: “That site already exists”
If a site already exists or is reserved, you will need to choose a different address for your new site.
Every site that is registered needs to use a new, unique address that hasn’t been registered before. We cannot recycle or reassign site addresses (URLs) which may appear to be abandoned. We respect bloggers’ ownership of their content and therefore will not move or delete a site without its owner’s consent — no matter how long it has been since their last update.
If you want help choosing a site address, you can also get suggestions in the signup process here:

Error: “That site is reserved”
If a site already exists or is reserved, you will need to choose a different address for your new site.
A reserved site means the address is already reserved for an existing WordPress.com user.

Help, my site is down!
If you can’t access your site in a web browser, please contact your website hosting provider.
Your hosting provider can investigate why your site isn’t working, and help you get it back up and running. The WordPress app can only connect to your site when WordPress is installed and working there, so if you can’t access your site at all, the app (and the app support team) can’t fix that.
You can also check the Common WordPress Errors support page for common problems and how to resolve them on your site.
Once your site is working again, you can try to connect to it and manage it within the app.
🔴 I have removed references to WP.com and updated the "learn more about roles and capabilities" link but this article will need more reviewing as wp.org invitations work differently in org and com.
How can I add users to my site?
On WordPress.com sites, you can add users to your site by sending invitations. To send an invitation, you’ll need these two pieces of information:
A person’s username or email address The role that you’d like a person to have on your site
How to Invite People
- Select the My Sites icon in the navigation bar.
- Select the “People” section.
- Tap the plus (+) icon in the top right.
- Enter the username or email address of the person you want to invite.
- Select the role you want that person to have on your site.
- Optional: Add a custom message that will be included in the invitation.
- Tap “Send” (on Android) or “Invite” (on iOS) in the top right to send the invitation.
After sending the invitation, the person that you invited will receive an invitation email. Once the user clicks the “Accept Invitation” button in that email, they will be added to your site.
User Roles
User roles determine the access level or permissions of a person authorized (invited by an Administrator) to use a WordPress site.
Administrator – nothing is off-limits. Editor – has access to all posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, and links. Author – can write, upload photos to, edit, and publish their own posts. They can also view comments. Contributor – has no publishing or uploading capability, but can write and edit their own posts until they are published, and can view comments. Follower (public sites) / Viewer (private sites only) – can read and comment on posts and pages Each user role is capable of everything that a less powerful role is capable of. (In other words, Editors can do everything Authors can do, Authors can do everything Contributors can do, and so on.)
You can read more about user roles here

You’ll be shown all of your available themes for that site. You can also search them by name.
- Once you find the theme you want, tap on it.

How can I export my site’s content?
On Android
To export your site’s content from the WordPress mobile app you need to click on the Settings tab
Next, scroll all the way down and click on the Export Content tab
Next you will see a pop-up message saying your exported content will be sent to the email address associated with your WordPress.com account. Click on the Export Content option.
The system will export your site’s content to your email and will let you know once it’s done. Please note that depending on your email server and internet connection the file might take a while to get to your inbox. Also, it’s worth noting this type of email is rarely allowed into your main inbox. Please check any alternative inboxes you might have, like the Updates folder on Gmail for example, Spam and trash folders too.
The email should look like this
Once you open it, you will see a Download blue button. Click on the button to download the file to your device

While it’s not possible to import your site’s content from the app at the moment, you can do so by logging into your account from a browser at https://wordpress.com/login and then go to My Sites – Tools – Import and you will be able to upload the site’s content file.
You can find a step-by-step tutorial on how to import content to your site here.

How can I manage my site?
To manage your site, select the Android-MySites-Icon My Site icon at the bottom of the app and choose the site you are ready to manage.
From here you can add or edit blog posts, pages, media files, and comments.
Under Settings, you’ll see the option to set your site title and tagline, update your site privacy settings, set your timezone, configure your homepage settings, select your default editor, and a few additional post settings and formats.

How do I block someone?
While it’s not possible to block someone from viewing a public website, you do have some options.
Firstly, you can moderate your followers and remove them. There’s more information about managing your followers and specifically removing them here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/followers/#how-to-remove-a-follower
You can also change your comment moderation settings. Here you can ensure that comments from specific users and / or IP addresses are sent straight to spam. There are more details on how to do that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

How do I change my timezone?
Your site’s timezone is set to Coordinated Universal Time, UTC by default, which is in London, UK.
If you live in a different area of the world you will likely want to change this option.
You can change the timezone in your site’s General Settings (in a web browser).
For sites hosted at WordPress.com:
- Open your site’s General Settings in a web browser
- Find the Site Timezone setting
- Select your timezone or a city in the same timezone
For sites hosted elsewhere:
- Open your site’s dashboard in a web browser
- Go to Settings > General to find the Timezone setting
- Select your timezone or a city in the same timezone
🔴 I think it makes sense to leave the WP.com part to avoid confusion but it would be good to review the article again.
How do I connect my site?
WordPress.com or Self-hosted site connected to Jetpack
To access a site hosted with WordPress.com, log in to the app with your WordPress.com credentials.
When you open the app for the first time, click on Log In or Sign Up with WordPress.com and enter the email address associated with your account:
WordPress App Login Screen
Please note: If you use an email that is not associated with any WordPress.com account it will automatically create a new account for you linked to the email you added.
You can choose to receive a login link via email or enter your password to access your account
Login Link
If you choose the link option, we’ll email you a special link that, once you click it, will log you into your account without needing to enter a password.
The link will work once only, and expires after one hour for added security.
Password (WordPress.com)
You can also log in with your email address and password:
Password Login
Log in to a Self-Hosted Site
To access a WordPress site that is self-hosted, tap the “Enter your site address” link, then enter the site address to connect to your site. You will then be asked to enter your username and password you use to log into WP-Admin (https://yoursiteaddress.com/wp-admin).
If your site is connected to Jetpack, you will also need to provide your WordPress.com login information to receive your Stats.
Add Additional Sites
To add more sites to your app at any point, select the Switch Site option, tap the “+” icon in the top right corner, and choose the appropriate option:
- Create a brand new WordPress.com website
- Add an existing self-hosted WordPress site
Each of your sites can then be managed independently through the app. Though any WordPress.com sites will need to be managed from the same WordPress.com account.
🔴 I do not think this is possible in the WP app, it should be reviewed.
How do I delete my site?
Deleting a WordPress.com site permanently removes it and you’ll never be able to re-use its WordPress.com address (such as yourgroovysite.wordpress.com).
To delete your entire site and its contents, you can select your site in the app and go to the “Settings” section.
There, scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap “Delete Site.” You can follow the instructions on screen to delete it.
You can also learn more about deleting your site, and other options, here:https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/
Self-hosted sites
In the iOS app, you can remove a self-hosted site by going to the My Site tab and clicking on the Remove Site option at the bottom.
Remove site option in WordPress iOS app In the Android app, click the arrow beside your site address, then long press the site you wish to delete.
Remove Site option in WordPress Android app If it’s a Jetpack site, you can disconnect the site from Jetpack, but this will not actually delete the site from the web. To do that you would need to contact your host.
🔴 I do not think this is relevant for the WP app, it should be removed.
How do I earn money?
If you are looking to include ads on your blog, you can sign up for WordAds. (WordAds works on WordPress.com sites and self-hosted sites with the Jetpack plugin.) Learn more and sign up for WordAds. It’s worth noting that a site generally needs thousands of page views each month to earn meaningful advertising revenue. What you earn can vary greatly per site, depending on the following factors:
- The amount of traffic.
- Where the majority of the traffic is coming from. (North American ad placements currently pay-out at a much greater level than international ads.)
- How many are using ad blockers.
- The actual ads that are displayed.
You can find information about monetizing your site including some other options here:https://en.support.wordpress.com/monetize-your-site/
🔴 I do not see this option in the WP app, it should be removed.

How to create a site?
To create a brand new WordPress.com site, you can go to My Site and click “create site” (if you have a brand new WordPress.com account) or the dropdown arrow to the right of your existing site list:
Then, click on the plus (+) sign on the top right corner of the screen
After that, select the option to either create a brand new WordPress.com site or add an existing WordPress.org (self-hosted) site. Please note you are not able to create a new Self-hosted site from the app. You would need to create the site from your hosting account and then you can add the site to the app.
🔴 I do not think this this will be available in the WP app, this article should be removed.
How to set up stats via Jetpack?
Jetpack is a plugin that connects your self-hosted site (WordPress.org) to WordPress.com and enables awesome features like stats, notifications, and more. To use Jetpack and view your self-hosted blog’s stats follow the steps below. They’re best done on a laptop computer or tablet; they can be a bit tough on a smaller phone screen.
If you don’t have Jetpack installed…
- Install the Jetpack plugin on your blog. To install, go to the Plugins section of your WordPress dashboard from a web browser and select Add New. Search for Jetpack, and click “Install Now”.
- Once the plugin is installed you’ll need to connect it to a WordPress.com account. In the Jetpack tab in your dashboard click the “Connect to get started” button.
- You’ll next see a screen asking you to authorize the Jetpack connection to your WordPress.com account. Click “Authorize Jetpack”.
- You’ll now be redirected back into your WordPress site’s Dashboard.
If you already have Jetpack installed, or after you install Jetpack follow the steps above…
- From your WP-Admin dashboard click on Jetpack and then on Set Up Jetpack
- This will prompt you to log in with the WordPress.com username and password your site is connected to. This is separate from the username and password you use to log in to your self-hosted site’s Dashboard, like https://yoursite.com/wp-admin
After logging in you’ll see the stats for your site displayed. If you don’t remember the WordPress.com account you used to connect Jetpack…
- Go to the Jetpack section of your WordPress dashboard in a web browser.
- Scroll down to the “Connections” section.
- In “Account connection” you can see the connected WordPress.com account.
- If you can’t remember the password for that WordPress.com account, you can also reset the password.

I get a “Blog returned invalid data” error message.
The easiest way to check for invalid characters is to go to the W3C Markup Validator and type in the URL of your WordPress site.
If you get a response such as “… one or more bytes that I cannot interpret as UTF-8″ that is most likely what is causing the app to have trouble with your site.
Often, invalid data errors are caused by theme and plugin conflicts. You can check for these by switching to your default theme and deactivating your plugins. You can identify the offending the theme or plugin by activating one at a time and then retesting the app.
This article will need to be reviewed entirely since the WP app no longer uses Jetpack.
I get the error “Unable to Sync.”
If your site uses the Jetpack plugin, you may see an error like this:
**Unable to Sync** The Jetpack site is inaccessible
or returned an error:
This error means there is a problem with your site’s Jetpack connection.
You can use the Jetpack debugger to find the issues, and get information about fixing them.
Do you need more help fixing the error?
Take a look at Jetpack Troubleshooting Tips for resolving common problems. You can also contact Jetpack support or contact us through the app for more help!

Site Icons
Site Icons are shown across WordPress.com, in your visitor’s browser tab, in widgets like Blogs I Follow, and as a bookmark and home screen app icon when saved to a browser or phone. Here are several examples:

What is my Site address?
If you already have a website, your URL or site address is the domain of your site – usually what you type into a web browser to get to your website, plus https:// part.
For instance, WordPress.com is our domain, and the URL or site address is https://wordpress.com/
How can I share my site address in the app?
To copy your site address for sharing, you can follow these steps:
- Go to My Site > View Site or tap your site address on the My Site screen.
- Then in the webview, tap the share icon and select Copy to copy the URL. You can also select an app to share the link with others.
This article will need to be reviewed entirely since the WP app no longer uses Jetpack stats
Why do I get a “connection refused” error when on the stats tab?
If you’ve installed an ad blocker app such as AdFree Android, it might block your connection to https://wordpress.com/stats. You will need to edit the /system/etc/hosts file on your device and remove all entries that have wordpress.com/stats to get it working again.
