Add optional Critical Hit rules
Optional Rule - It hit something important!: When you suffer a critical hit, the second point of damage is dealt to one of the remaining stats, decided randomly. If any stat reaches 0, you crash
WW1 planes were prone to mishaps. Guns skipping or jamming, wires catching on something or the yoke getting stuck were not uncommon. Many of them were just mechanical faults, but many would also be a side-effect of something more crucial being hit during combat. This rule is a nod to all those things.
If the "death spiral" is an issue, we can always add another optional rule where a player can recover some lost stat points with something like this:
Optional Rule - Quick Fix!: Once per round spend any amount of available maneuverability points. For each point spent, roll a d6. If you rolled at least one 4-6 you can recover one of your lost stat points
Apart from helping with the death spiral, this rule gives players more choice during the game, as now instead of always trying to shoot the enemy down, you have an option to run away and try to come back. It's also pretty true to actual WW1 air combat, when pilots would try to break away from the "hornets' nest" to fix a jammed gun with a hammer or untangle a wire stopping you from turning left, etc. Using maneuverability points because at this time you're not really flying the plane, your doing the fixing and letting the plane just go on its own, maybe keeping the yoke between your legs to go more or less straight ;)
