JSON format for widget/operator configuration files?

The XML and RDF configuration formats are somewhat verbose. What are some considerations related to a JSON configuration format?

Support for using JSON configurations is almost ready. Anyway, it's not documented and we have to make some improvements before making it official, so this ticket still applies.
