No indication that destination for changes is Read Only

Open archer1960 opened this issue 5 months ago • 4 comments

I ended up going through a rather large set of updates twice, due to the fact that the destination folder was marked readonly, and WinMerge never told me that it was unable to make the updates. The display indicated that things were identical, but when I went back and re-did the compare, the same differences showed up again. After changing the ReadOnly setting, it worked as expected.

Thank you for reporting this issue. I could not reproduce the problem with the following test:

  • Set ReadOnly attribute on all subfolders and files on both sides
  • Copied the left folder to the right folder

The right side was overwritten as expected. Could you provide more details so we can reproduce the issue?

  • OS version and WinMerge version
  • Type and location of the destination folder (local NTFS, network, cloud-synced, etc.)
  • Exact steps you used to set the ReadOnly attribute (folder only or all files/subfolders?)

Thanks for the quick response! A few more details: OS is Windows 11, on a new (1 month old) Dell desktop. WinMerge Version 2.16.50.0 X64 The drive is a USB drive (a Micro SD card in an external reader), drive letter L. I am checking the folder L:\Music, which was the Right side of the compare. The Read Only attribute was already set when I put the card in the reader, but I didn't notice it. When I noticed it, I used windows explorer Properties dialog to remove the ReadOnly attribute on the top-level folder (L:\Music) and subfolders, but not the whole drive. ReadOnly was not set on the left side of the compare, which was my internal HD.

HTH; let me know if you need anything else...

I don’t have an SD card to test with, but I tried using a USB flash drive and also changed the folder owner. However, I couldn’t reproduce the issue. If there’s a way to reproduce it without special hardware, could you please let me know?

Thanks for testing this; I'll see if I can repro it elsewhere.
