Winmerge comparing process speed drops at 0.0 [items/sec]

Hi first of all, I love WinMerge.

I would like to inquire, what could be the problem why the speed drops at 0 items / sec. The file where it drops is just 1kb. So it's not about the size of the file.

I am searching using Full Contents. I am comparing local files against local remote file. I hope you could help me identify the problem.

Is there a message box showing an error hidden behind the WinMerge window? Also, what happens if you use the Binary contents compare method instead of the Full Contents compare method as shown below?

Hi, I have the very same problem. I'm comparing two folders (with subfolders) containing 6GB of photos. I have a i9-13900HX with 24 physical cores that ends up being 32 logical cores.

With Full Contents:

  • with 1 or 2 cores it runs fine;
  • with 4 cores or more it goes to 0 items/sec;
  • with 31 cores (default) the search speed quickly goes to 0 items/sec;

Moreover, when it goes down to 0 items/sec the app gets stuck and I need to manually terminate it.
No message box appears with any error.

With Binary Contents I get only one core running with 100 items/sec average.

It's probably stating the obvious, but can we rule out that there isn't a file that is hard to read from the disk?

I just checked: no, there is no issue in reading the file with any other tool.
