Hide widget when certain category is empty

Hello there, I have a widget that displays a certain number of previews from a specific category. I'd like to hide the widget entirely, when the category is empty. 'Empty' meaning, there is no post with that specific category. All taxonomies seem to relate to the actual post that is being displayed. Or am i getting this wrong? Any hints or ideas would be appreciated, thank you. Jan
