Rework UI & UX

Open 6543 opened this issue 2 years ago • 6 comments

Describe the problem

If you are used to weblate it might not fall in your eyes ... It's hard to warp around your head if you did got in touch with pontoon or Crowdin

This issue is not a simple feature-request but try to start a discussion how make it better.

I do really see a downside of using Weblate for a project that you only can expect contributions from developers, I could get normal people only translation on crowdin ...

Describe the solution you'd like

Get some volunteer designeer ...
https://opensourcedesign.net/jobs/ might be an idea

Describe alternatives you've considered

use some other platform - I know this sounds harsh & that weblate is FOSS, so consider this not a personal criticism the features and what weblate is able to do and already achieved is awesome

Screenshots

especialy the translation editor and how you filter stuff: Screenshot from 2022-05-17 17-55-37 Screenshot from 2022-05-17 17-56-09 Screenshot from 2022-05-17 17-57-07

There is always room for improvements (for example, some suggestions are in https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/7391), but I don't think copying Crowdin is a way to go. Actually, we've also received quite some feedback that users like Weblate UI over Crowdin, so it might also be a matter of personal preference...

This issue has been put aside. It is currently unclear if it will ever be implemented as it seems to cover too narrow of a use case or doesn't seem to fit into Weblate.

Please try to clarify the use case or consider proposing something more generic to make it useful to more users.

hmm should I create a new discussion at https://opensourcedesign.net/, so designers could have a look at?

or add some theme engine? so community can write one as they like?

@nijel but I don't think copying Crowdin is a way to go. Actually, we've also received quite some feedback that users like Weblate UI over Crowdin, so it might also be a matter of personal preference...

@6543 or add some theme engine? so community can write one as they like?

@nijel yes, i agree and I think we can improve zen mode for that and keep weblate default UI without touch (it can go for different path)

weblate is a copy-lefted opensource project; sometimes i wonder why mozilla spent money to build another opensource localization platform? i don't know more about that project history but it doesn't generate income for them or does it have new features than weblate? Apparently, they like crowdin and transifex but those are not opensource or on-premise and weblate isn't user-friendly and smart enough for them.

crowdin & pontoon come with similar UI

MT & other components - those are not available for zen mode and no comments, no history, no context, or whatever normal mode - we need to move between tabs to see MT/TM, comments, history, other languages etc but crowdin display them all on single page for each strings including screenshots (also, transifex bit). When a translator see them all at once; it helps to get better idea, and save time too. Also, we need a side bar or something else to see nearby strings directly without scrolling up & down in zen mode

(Optional) Notification - It's possible to track them through https://hosted.weblate.org/user/name/#watched (may be you can improve it bit) Deadline & Priority info - As i know, weblate only support for send announcement mails and stored them in project --> insights -- announcements. https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/admin/announcements.html Additionally, Try to add unread notification for unread announcements and or need new deadline column [2] (?) ksnip_20220729-141801 ksnip_20220729-142041

Mass actions are more beneficial in zen mode (during translation) and i think no problem with sync with git etc.

I'll already working on a lot of FOSS projects ... so I'll likely only fix smal nits but dont expect more :/

I'll have to checkout the "zen mode" was not able to switch to it ... but also did not translate a lot in the last time
