[test] Improve error messages from runner

[vitiral]

I was playing around with writing a wasm-based language and was trying to use the core tests to validate my code. While doing development I found the error messages hard to work with, so I opened #1103. However, I don't have to time to shepherd the CL as real life has come up so I'm closing it in favor of this issue.
