Don't know what distro you're on but I'd suggest checking out the comments in the extension page.

Most recommendations include editing the metadata.json file and adding the Gnome version you're on.

Not my prefered method but here is one relevant comment:

1. Download Shell version: 41 -- 2
2. Rename folder to "[email protected]"
3. Into the folder, open file "metadata.json". Edit line to the line "shell-version": [ "3.36", "3.38", "40", "41", "42", "43" ],
3. Move folder "[email protected]" to ".local/share/gnome-shell/extensions"
4. Device Logout
5. Open the extension, check and enable.

I'm not an expert, but I did have a similar issue with PopOS and what I did was reinstall the extension via the website. Notice that PopOS did not update like Ubuntu so that may be why it works for me. Sorry I can't be of more help.

This is probably redundant to ask but did you install the fildem binary alongside the addon?
