classic.wz - the old balancing of the Campaign and the Multiplayer
There have been a lot of complaints regarding the difficulty and the weapons balancing for the Campaign. Most of these complaints are coming from the people who played this game a long time ago, back in the 1.0~1.10 age and haven't touched the new releases since then. As such, here comes a proposal started by @berserkingyadis .
We propose that a new mode, or mod (depending on what you want to call it) activated with the press of an in-game menu (or set up as a 2nd shortcut after installing the game) should be available:
Classic Mode , where we can use the old weapon stats and some of the older textures: the wheels propulsion for example.
We should not mess with the settings for sync, for MP or other optimization stuff as the current version is pretty stable regarding ping and jitter. I also think we all remember the old Cheat Engine tricks with the sped-up research and power generation. Thankfully we're way past that.
To end this issue entry I'll ask this:
Should we use the old (2).0.2 files [will pretty much nullify the MP stuff I wrote above] or the master files but with the changed stats, by copying the ones from (2).0.2 ? For mp.wz and base.wz we'll need only to change the weapon stats, and maybe set the difficulty to NORMAL and not to SUICIDE as default for the campaign. This would be the easiest way to make the Classic Mode a thing.
Cheers!

I know about it, it's a weird combination of the 2.x.x with the old stats/research paths and the NTW terrain palette, not what I want to be honest. I'm aiming for that original feel, both texture/model-wise and stats-wise.
For now, I've managed to switch some of the weapons stats and add back the old wheels model.
Kudos to Mysteryem for making them compatible with our current versions back in 2014.
Next step would be the old terrain palette. :smirk:
I really love those screenshots. The wheels look great as well!
Gotta be honest with you, the lighting in these old screenshots look better than the current version ... now we have shadows darkening the whole environment just because "shadows are cool 3d technology". Especially the top image is an extremely well done env because of the fog that matches the terrain, looking like dust and kinda moonish and eerie too.
The current lighting situation is just spooky and generally out of touch (at least on some maps, I guess).
A good fix to add would be "fix fog"
@past-due @bjorn-ali-goransson "fix fog"? you mean this particular piece of weather that was removed?
That and the dusty haze that was omnipresent during the entire Alpha Campaign
We need it back. It may be possible to tone it down a bit though.

It was removed in master_20111026, here are the relevant links for it: 2920 Ticket GitHub Commit
We may just be able to recover the original code from the GitHub Commit
This task (reimplementing fog) should really be outside classic.wz, easier to separate them.
It seems the actual functionality is still left, they just removef the code that enables it ... They didn't remove pie_SetFogColour

Even if it's for the whole shabang, I'm all for it. :+1: ~~Until then, I'll return to trying to convert the old tank traps pie model to the new ones ~~
You should reach out to Urken / Jorzi for that, he's a real PIE master. Do other stuff 😁
Old Tank Traps are here as well. Still one or two tweaks needed, but they're displaying somewhat properly.
Looking great 😁
Really like the classic orig appearance
@Lupus-Mechanicus whats the state on this
@berserkingyadis I haven't touched this in ages I'm afraid...
The PR itself was canned too, since a lot of changes would've required some extensive in-depth checking of the original stats and some retooling of the terrain/building textures for the rendering itself.
That being said, I'm willing to restart the work on this.
If fog or other graphics settings/mods can be an advantage/disadvantage in gameplay, lobby should have an ability to optionally force or recommend clients to a selected state. Could be that clients list such settings and host can review/kick particular undesired configurations instead of a lobby mandate.
Lobby searching should be able to filter out games with undesired settings. Some will not like certain settings as a personal preference and some may find settings undesired for reasons such as bad FPS on their hardware configuration.
